ARLINGTON, Texas – The Seattle University Redhawks beat the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks women’s basketball team 81-77 on Feb. 29 at College Park Center.
UTA is ranked No. 4 in the conference with a record of 14-14, and Seattle U is No. 10 in the conference with a record of 5-22. Seattle is second to last, just ahead of Utah Valley.
The final plays of the game determined the winner. With a three-point lead, Seattle’s Noemie Bariteau made a three-point shot to increase the lead from three to six points with eight seconds left to go. UTA player Gia Adams made an assisted two-point jumper with three seconds left on the clock to drop the deficit to four points. Seattle got the ball and ran the clock out.
At the end of the first quarter, Seattle U led the game with a 13-point lead. UT Arlington was able to catch up by the end of the second quarter and go into halftime down by one-point at a score of 37-36.
“We had every opportunity to win this game tonight,” Mavs Coach Shereka Wright said. “Free throws was a killer for us as we talked about, again, this is uncharacteristic of us and so [we’re] going to accept it and move on.”
The UT Arlington Mavericks shot 12-25 from the charity stripe, a 48% clip. Seattle U Redhawks went 25-31 in free throws, shooting at 80.6%.
The Mavericks leading scorer, Taliyah Clark, went 5-for-8 on three-points shots, the most of the night by anyone from both teams.
“Being confident in my shot, I have my teammates confident in me,” Clark said. “They want me to make those shots, hit those shots, and get those shots, so, they put me in great positions to even attempt them.”
Makayla Moore had 17 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals for the RedHawks. Clark led the Mavericks with 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists.
