ARLINGTON, Texas— The night sky glowed brightly over Arlington Monday as the Harvest Moon made its annual appearance, signaling the arrival of fall and lighting up the skyline.
The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox, marking the transition from summer to fall. Unlike other full moons, it rises soon after sunset for several nights in a row, giving farmers extra light to harvest their crops. This is the tradition that gave the moon its name.
This year the Harvest Moon was also a super-moon, meaning it occurred while the moon was at its closest point to earth, making it appear bigger and brighter than usual.
The rare overlap of a super moon and the Harvest Moon marks the start of a series of bright lunar displays expected in the coming months, signaling the shift into the cooler, longer nights of fall.
