ARLINGTON, Texas—This photo essay explores the creative process of a local artist whose work reflects the vivid scenery and landscape of Big Bend National Park.
For Charlie Kennedy, inspiration can be found anywhere, from the dusty desert trails to the towering mountains and the warm hues of a setting sun. Big Bend serves as a constant muse, its essence finding its way into every one of his canvases.
Kennedy first visited the park with his aunt at age 19 and has made it his primary vacation spot since. After marriage, his wife became part of the journey. She’d drive him to a scenic area, pick out a good book and wait for his return.
They each found peace in their own way, yet always together. Now, he brings along his grandchildren to share his joy for nature and art.
In the 1980s, Kennedy built a studio behind his home to serve as his creative space. It cost him $3,000 to build from the ground up, but now it has a greater value to him. Recently, he began displaying his work in galleries around Arlington.
In August 2025, Kennedy put on his first show at The Upstairs Gallery, where he displayed several of the paintings he had done over the years.
