ARLINGTON, Texas—The Tarleton State Texans beat the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks basketball team 80-78 at College Park Center in Feb. 15 hoops action.
The contest remained close throughout. The Texans at one point had a seven-point lead, while the Mavericks enjoyed a five-point lead at another.
With three seconds on the clock and the Texans clinging to a two-point advantage, the Mavericks’ Sterling Gaston-Chapman stole the ball from Adam Moussa, but DaJuan Gordon’s last-second layup attempt did not go through the hoop.
Mavericks coaches and players said that their three-point shooting and defense were not on par for this game.
“It was a bad night three-point shooting,” Williams said. “[We’re] usually a good three-point shooting team. “It’s just one game. We’ll get past it.”
UT Arlington went 7-for-28 on three-point attempts, a 25% clip. The Texans went 7-for-21 from beyond the arc, shooting 33%.
“We weren’t guarding the way we have been guarding, weren’t getting deflections, we were letting them get easy post catches,” Mavs Coach KT Turner said. “We weren’t guarding the ball like we have been the last few games, but I just feel like our defense wasn’t there.”
Gordon led the Mavericks team with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists. Lue Williams led the Tarleton State Texans with 22 points, one rebound, and three assists.
This game was also a foul heavy game, with the Texans having 23 fouls to the Mavericks 20 fouls.
