ARLINGTON, Texas—The Arlington Master Chorale is preparing an uplifting concert that will feature new orchestrations, young guest performers and a message Artistic Director Kay Owens hopes will resonate with audiences facing a difficult holiday season.
Owens, in her first year leading the group after a 41-year career directing award-winning choirs, said she built the program around a shared theme of hope. She selected two arrangements of the same inspirational text, presented in multiple languages, and says the meaning remains clear no matter how it’s sung.
In a recent rehearsal at Trinity First United Methodist Church, Owens led the ensemble through warm-ups and fine-tuned entrances, asking singers to deliver a performance that “moves people and makes them feel joyous.” She noted that the holidays are not always easy for everyone and keeps that in mind as they rehearse.
The upcoming performance is slated to also include guest choirs from junior and high schools in the Arlington and Mansfield school districts, many appearing on a large concert hall stage for the first time. Owens said inviting them helps the Chorale reach deeper into the community and gives students a rare opportunity to perform for a sizeable audience.
Local composer Dr. Brock Snow has orchestrated two pieces for the event, which the Chorale will premiere with a full orchestra. Owens said performing new orchestrations adds excitement and challenge for the singers.
As the concert approaches, the Chorale aims to unite seasoned voices, young performers and newly orchestrated works into a musical gift for the Arlington community.
Arlington Master Chorale is scheduled to perform Gloria! at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 and Dec. 12 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Tickets are still available.
